Concert Preview: Ekali at 45 East on April 29th

Red Cube Presents- Ekali

April is certainly shaping up to be an exciting month for music lovers in Portland! The local EDM hotspot 45 East is bringing big names like KRANE, Sharps, Rusko, Loudpvck, and others to the beautiful northwest this month. To top it off, 45 East recently announced that one of my favorite artists Ekali will be taking the stage April 29th.

Ekali

Ekali at Beyond Wonderland

Vancouver native Ekali has truly made a name for himself in the EDM Community. He has over 136K followers on Soundcloud and has released multiple major hits, including his recent collaboration with KRANE titled“AKIRA”. His success is rather intriguing considering he only has 22 tracks on Soundcloud. He has an impressive track record with performances at huge festivals including Beyond Wonderland, Hard Summer, Lightning In a Bottle, Coachella, and Shambhala to name a few.

Where Ekali truly shines is through his remixes. One of Ekali’s most successful songs is his remix of Flume’s “Smoke & Retribution”. If you listen to mixes regularly or attend shows you have probably heard his remix before. It has over 90.8K likes on Soundcloud and frequents many artist’s sets. Another one of his most popular remixes is “Gemini” by What So Not. I will always remember the first time I heard this song. You know those moments when you just let your Soundcloud stream play in the background, and then you hear that one song that you can’t ignore? Ever since that moment he has been on my radar and he never disappoints. The sound he created with his synths as they dance with the vocals is absolutely breathtaking.

A year ago he released his “Tribute” of Flux Pavilion’s “I Can’t Stop”. It was quite a ballsy move in my opinion but he absolutely nailed it. With this tribute he proved that he is able to remix untouchable songs, add his unique sound and style to make it his own, all without butchering the integrity of the original. Ekali has also remixed other hits including “Meet in the Middle” by Ta-ku & Wafia, “Long Time No See” by Ta-ku, a collaboration with Gravez”Threatz” by Denzel Curry, “Can I” by Alina Baraz & Galimatias, and many more. You can visit his Soundcloud page Here

Mixing As An Art

His remixes are stunning, but his artistry with mixing is what puts him over the edge. He has mastered the art of mixing hip hop/rap with electronic beats and everything in-between. Ekali is able to “play to the crowd” – compare his live sets from Coachella 2016 to Shambhala 2015 and you will understand what I’m saying. Recently he announced his new hour long mix series, Awakening, where he will release a new mix every three months. In march he released the first mix of his series titled “Mix. 1″ and you can find it below.
