Interview: DRRTYWULVZ talks all things music ahead of his first Canadian performance at Future Forest Festival 2019

Never defined by the boundaries of any specific genre, Levi Witt who is more commonly known as DJ and Producer DRRTYWULVZ is known for his psychedelic performances that energize crowds at every show. Making his Canadian debut, DRRTYWULVZ will be performing at Future Forest Festival in Albrights Corner, New Brunswick taking place from July 26-29th! For its 7th consecutive year, the festival has released their whole lineup which includes headliners Ardalan, Justin Martin, Kenny Glasgow, Stickybuds and many more, including an amazing selection of live art displays and wellness workshops. We had a chance to talk with him ahead of the festival and ask him about his music and his performances, here is what he had to say…

Your sound is defined as “Psychedelic Bass” music… Can you describe this genre in your best words to someone who may not be familiar with it?

It’s a pretty broad label, as it’s hard to pin point my exact style with a few words that make sense to listeners. While taking influence from well known genres like Dub, Reggae, Dubstep, DnB, Halftime and Hip-hop beats… I also take influence from the psychedelic styles such as Psytrance / Psydub and techno. Somewhere down the middle I try to take people on a journey through styles and formats that we all know and love, but also take them past the realms of the usual, to a weirder and more interesting place of sound.

Inevitably, the visuals you have that go along with your audio set are an extremely important part of the overall experience for the audience. How do you decide on the visuals, are they different for every set?

I actually don’t have any control on visuals at the moment. A lot of the artists out at the festivals are completely reliant on the VJ sourcing and performing the visuals. Often times, the VJ and LD are just badasses and know what will fit the vibe. Other times there will just be simple visuals that will just enhance the vibe of the stage a bit. Sonic Bloom had some masterminds at work and we were all very lucky to have been able to watch their visual offerings all weekend.

What do you know so far about Future Forest and the vibes of the festival?

All I can think so far is it seems hype, yet underground. These are the festivals I really enjoy because you discover a lot more new music. I like intimately sized festivals, as you get a good peek at the community but not overwhelmed at size and vibe.

How do you believe your sound and performance will resonate with those attending the festival?

As this is my first Canadian performance, I’m sure there will be some excited folks getting down. My sets have been growing in intensity and doing quite well this year in terms of crowd movement and dancing. My goal is just to inspire, and get everyone groovin’ and have a good time.
