Indie electro dance group GOBI has announced their official album release party for their “Gold On Black Ice (Deluxe Edition)” on Saturday, Feb. 7 at Holy Mountain located at 617 E 7th St., Austin, Texas 78701. Doors will open at 8 p.m. and GOBI will perform at 11 p.m. with special guests Keeper and Aviateur. Tickets are $8 in advance and $12 at the door. “This album is the first time we’ve been able to spend the countless nights/hours we needed to create a sound and feeling that we truly feel epitomizes the music we’ve been wanting to produce for years,” said Chuco Phil, GOBI’s vocalist. “We grew a lot while writing this album. Everyone in the group has gone through changes from losing loved ones, to exploring more of this beautiful place we call the world, and in writing ‘Gold On Black Ice’ – we wanted to make a dance-driven synth-heavy album with a soul, tracks that have melodies and are fun, but have underlining tones of depth.”
The “Gold On Black Ice (Deluxe Edition)” was produced by GOBI, co-produced by Aj Vallejo and Colin “Cadillac” Roberts and mixed by Colin “Cadillac” Roberts. The album features 13 songs written by GOBI and a cover of Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home”.
GOBI’s “Gold On Black Ice (Deluxe Edition)” takes the Austin-based trio’s indie-dance style and adds new depths, allowing the bass and beats to drive fans to the dance floor, but also creating images of fading dreams and a nostalgic yearning for the past. It is rare to find this type of dimension from a band known for turning Texas clubs into blazing dance floors, but GOBI has achieved the balance of meshing dark, sometimes cinematic beats, with the mosaic of imagery that vocalist Chuco Phil delivers through tight rap-inspired flows and melodic choruses. GOBI’s single “Dream With Me” seems to rise from a place that is both comfort and pain, a landscape that soothes with swooping synth tones, and haunts with a touching grace.
On the LP, Justin Dillon accomplishes the majority of the heavy electronic emphasis in the production, using analog synths and modern plug-ins, taking cues and inspiration from the likes of Deadmau5 and Nero, but the band is far from pushing play when it comes to their live performance. Though GOBI presents itself on record as an electronic heavy group, drummer Matthew Kevin Dunn adds a live element that is a spiritual awakening for percussion enthusiasts.
“‘Gold On Black Ice’ is the culmination of over 10 years working on electronic music production,” said Beatmaker / Guitarist Justin Dillon. “I feel like I was finally able to clearly communicate through music on this album.
“On this project I was able to express and develop my personal style using a variety of percussive elements including djembes, congas, claves, and of course more cowbell,” said the band’s drummer Matthew Kevin Dunn. “As a drummer and percussionist, I have the ability to use instruments from across the world to convey a message and provide a cathartic outlet for myself.”
“Sometimes you write five songs about the same idea and you end up trashing all five, chasing the dragon for that perfect one,” said Chuco Phil. “On this album there must have been some extra spiritual Duende force in the studio because we finally wrote the songs that tell a story we’ve been trying to capture since we started practicing on Lindsey Street in San Marcos years ago.”
In a city known for music, the band’s energy-fueled live show has gained them Austin Music Foundation’s artist of the month, and last summer the mayor of Austin declared June 6 as GOBI Day. GOBI has shared the stage and opened for acts ranging from: G-Eazy, The Cool Kids, and Chiddy Bang, to DJs such as MSTRKRFT, Treasure Fingers, Z-Trip, Paper Diamond, and new dance groups Big Gigantic, Future Rock and Nobody Beats the Drum. GOBI has showcased and performed at Insomniac’s Nocturnal Fest, Neon Desert Music Fest, Bacardi+ Fest, Red Guerrilla Music Fest and the Pachanga Music Festival. Sought after for their remixes, GOBI recently completed a remix for the Los Angeles-based pop duo Little & Ashley and their popular track “Stole My Heart” which was Amazon’s #1 free download in 2010 and featured in an Amazon Kindle television commercial. The remix appears on their latest album ‘Dreamy Happy Sexy’ which is being distributed by Razor & Tie.
