Houston, TX – This festival is the perfect event for the music lover and digital visual artistry enthusiast alike. In its inaugural year, Day for Night will feature a wide spectrum of your favorite current and classic artists, accompanied by a stunning display of lighting and sound brought to you by some of the leaders in digital technology. Silver Street Studios of Houston, Texas will host the event. With 70,000 square feet of event space and 70 studios, there will be no shortage of dance space or art. Free Press Houston (the founder of our other favorite Houston festival: Free Press Summer Fest) is the event organizer so we have full faith that FPSF’s winter counterpart will be just as amazing (maybe even better since it won’t be 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit outside)! In it’s first year, Day for Night is showcasing some major talent such as New Order, Kendrick Lamar, Janelle Monet, Flying Lotus, Dillon Francis, Death Grips, CocoRosie, Madeon, Prismo, Com Truise, and numerous others.
1. New Order
The legendary New Order will headline on Saturday December 19 at this immersive new festival. New Order will be throwing it back with all of your favorite hits like “Blue Monday,” “Age of Consent” and “Bizarre Love Triangle.” While most of us are familiar with the band’s biggest hits from the ‘80s, these Manchester natives were recently named Band of the Year by MOJO magazine. They may just whip out some new material from their new album: Music Complete. Regardless, this will be a blast from the past that you won’t want to miss.
2. Kendrick Lamar
Very little introduction is needed for Kendrick right now. As he continues to top charts, release killer tracks and receive Grammy nominations, Kendrick has once more proven the talent that seems to continuously brew deep within Compton, California. He just put out a record this year called To Pimp a Butterfly, so we can surely expect to get a look at some of his dope new tracks when he headlines on Sunday December 20, alongside the endless chart toppers from Section.80, Overly Dedicated and good kid, m.A.A.d city.
3. CocoRosie
Many of you that will be heading to Kendrick or New Order may not have heard of the duo: CocoRosie. The gorgeous, mustache-wearing, French sisters Sierra and Bianca give a whole new meaning to the term “experimental.” To try to categorize their music as any one genre would not do it justice. Their angelic voices layer with minimalistic yet powerful beats and melodies that entrance an audience. Don’t let the strange face-paint and fake mustaches fool you, these ladies will still set up an entire dressing room on stage and play dress up throughout their set while still playing the harp or calling upon their resident beat-boxer: Tez. I cannot stress enough taking the time to catch CocoRosie on Saturday at 5:00pm at Day for Night.
4. Flying Lotus
Music was in the cards for this producer from the very beginning. A descendant of the legendary duo: John and Alice Coltrane, Steven Ellison has been blending the beauty of classical instrumentation, producing beats and rapping since the mid-2000s. Very deservingly, Flying Lotus was also just recently nominated for a Grammy for his track “Never Catch Me” off of his You’re Dead! album. He will be taking the stage right before Kendrick on Saturday. You will probably catch the two of them collaborating at some point that evening, as they just worked together on Kendrick’s To Pimp a Butterfly album and Kendrick was featured on Flying Lotus’ Grammy nominated track.
5. Death Grips
This experimental hip-hop group out of Sacramento is my eternal love-hate relationship with an artist. After trying to see them three times over the past few years at various festivals in which their sets have always been canceled for one reason or the other, their Day for Night set will be at the top of my list of priorities for the weekend. Death Grips doesn’t just break the mold for modern hip-hop, they have completely reinvented it into a form all their own. For only really coming on to the scene around 2010, they have already put out four albums full of maniacal lyricism and experimental composition.
