Woodford Folk Festival, which is coming right up on December 27th – January 1st, is one of Australia’s most iconic annual events, and one of the worlds largest folk festivals. Additionally, it is one of the largest gatherings of artists and musicians in Australia. Aiming to encompass the depth and diversity of Australia’s cultural, artistic and social expression through music, dance, cabaret, circus, comedy, workshops, debate, street theatre, films forums, visual arts and children area, Woodford Folk fest is an eclectic way to ring in the new year! Artists set to play this year include Nahko and Medicine for the People, Caravan Sun, Violent Femmes, and way too many more artists to name.
The annual festival, which is six days and six nights, will feature over 500 acts performing across 28 venues to an aggregate attendance of 120,000 people in 2014. Produced by the Queensland Folk Federation, a non-profit, the festival has retained its grassroots, non-commercialized feel despite its large size. It is popular with all ages, and fans attest that the atmosphere is the best part of the festival.
The streets of Woodfordia (the festivals home) come alive with roving street theatre, parades, art, and spontaneous performances while top notch musicians play at over 28 venues across. Just an hours drive north of Brisbane, this 500 acre property has been developed into a cultural parkland dedicated to the arts, humanities and lore. Woodfordias infrastructure was built to accommodate a live-in population of 25,000 people and has been lovingly regenerated with over 100,000 subtropical rainforest trees, orchids, ferns, butterflies and wildlife. Sounds like a magical paradise if we ever heard of one!
If you’re looking for a magical week filled with music, arts, and escape, you’ve got to check out Woodford Folk Festival.
