Monterey International Pop Festival Celebrates 50 Years with Tribute Attractions

Monterey International Pop Festival- June 16-18, 2017

This weekend, Monterey International Pop Festival will be celebrating its 50th year at the Monterey County Fairgrounds. This year, the festival will be featuring many tribute attractions on site including an Art & Museum Exhibit, 1967 Festival Photographer Signings, the Morrison Hotel Gallery, Levi’s Outpost and Garden Stage DJ Sets.

To celebrate the music, style, and voice of the Summer of Love, Levi’s has announced that they will set up Levi’s Outpost on-site, from 11am – 7pm each day.Attendees can experience unique product collaborations, artist-led workshops and one-of-a-kind apparel customizations. DJ Harry Duncan will be performing at the Garden Stage throughout the weekend with sets inspired by the original festival and more.

There will also be an art exhibit on-site titled “It Happened in Monterey…Music, Love and Flowers”, designed by Abbott Miller of Pentagram and developed by Ileen Gallagher of ISG Productions. The exhibition explores the history of the original festival produced by John Phillips and Lou Adler. The exhibit is divided into five sections: Plan, Festival, Film, Charity and Impact. It traces the roots of the festival from 50 years ago all the way to present day. Rare documents and photographs reveal the planning of the festival and an environmental installation shows highlights from the Monterey Pop documentary. Lastly, documents, posters, record albums in the Charity and Impact sections trace the cultural implications of the festival.

The official gallery of the anniversary celebration, Morrison Hotel Gallery, will be on-site at the East Art building with a pop-up gallery that will have over 50 photographic prints for sale of the artists that performed at the original Monterey International Pop Festival, June 16, 17, & 18, 1967. Photographer Henry Diltz, Morrison Hotel Gallery co-owner and founder and one of the key photographers at the original festival, will be on site to sign autographs.
