New York’s latest dance music export, the three-piece experimental outfit that is N/UM, will drop their second release, their ‘YES’ EP on their own Ninetofire label on December 8, 2017.
Recorded in a single take in front of a live audience at House of Yes in Brooklyn, there was plenty of possibility of error – but instead, the EP is carried out beautifully with natural improvisation that is exciting and effortless.
Describing themselves as a ‘minimal, house & techno influenced live composition trio’, they are exactly that. Incorporating classic live instruments like the 808, 909, SH-101 and Mono/Poly coupled with their voices, guitars and sampling, they create a vibrant, interesting sound reminiscent of dance music with a contemporary, inventive twist.
Their previous and first release, Zebra, was featured in XLR8R‘s ‘Best of 2016’ master list, a major accolade in the dance music community, which garnered them wide-reaching international support. N/UM is compromised of of three guys from very different international and musical backgrounds: Grammy Award winning mastering engineer and producer Jeremy Loucas, guitarist of rap group Residente (Calle 13) Elias Mesiter, and Danish multi-instrumentalist and producer, Emil Bovjerg. Their different backgrounds make them stronger as a single unit with N/UM, and with this release it is clear that they are well on their way to bringing the world of musical improvisation to the underground dance community.
